Fat – Thin – Fatter

Ironically, we focus on weight loss when the real challenge is weight maintenance.

I could nearly guess that a larger percentage of women reading this email has lost weight in the past and regained the lost weight. Some regain pretty fast and some a steady drip over a longer period of time.

I can also guess that none of you had a strategy or a reverse dieting protocol in place to learn how to gradually increase your calories back to maintenance after the diet and then learn how to live at maintenance.

Why do we do this?

I firmly believe its a combination of factors:
1. The diet set up was incorrect.
2. Unrealistic, no life strategies or new habits implemented whilst dieting.
3. No reverse plan put in place to take the client back to maintenance.
4. Client achieved the target weight loss, dieted to the deadline event ( birthday, holiday, wedding) once the client return to normal life ’post-event’ they are not as highly motivated to maintain and work hard at eating at maintenance calories. They default to type and return to eating the same calories they did before the diet. Therefore- fat gain.

But, here’s the thing:

All diets work, we stop working the diet.

When I coach a client, I’m obsessed about helping them get rid of the rules around food and diets.

Client Habit

The all or nothing’ – i.e. I ate a biscuit – I ruined my diet – I may as well stuff myself the rest of the day and start fresh tomorrow.

My Resolution

I ensure I add the forbidden fruit into their weekly budget. It then loses its “forbidden” label.

I ensure they build in their non-negotiables into their weekly calorie budget. I ask them what foods can you not imagine NOT living without. Therefore, we budget for the cake calories, wine calories and takeaway calories. Coaching clients to learn that they can still lose weight whilst having a little of their favourite indulgences is not only fine but part of their balanced lifestyle.

It’s more sustainable.

Its promotes better weekday adherence.

Clients say they actually enjoy it more when they aren’t eating it as frequently.

They feel they aren’t missing out.

They make much better progress with weight loss and long term maintenance.

Practising clients how to complete their fat loss journey whilst “doing life” is imperative.  It eliminates the years of faulty programs and habits around being ‘perfect’ on your diet.  I make sure they are coached on how to attend nights out, get over a mini calorie splurge, go to weddings, nights out drinking with the girls… Yeah, the real-life stuff!!!  The stuff that ordinarily will have you throwing in the towel because you broke all your own rules.

We don’t have rules at TGF. We do weight loss the real-life way—no gimmicks, no fads, nothing complicated.

These clients enjoyed hen parties, weekends out, 2 week holidays, and even 3 day wakes! We navigate around the events and still make progress.
We navigate the diet around life, not the other way around.
