Ditch the Diet

Before I ditched the Diet, I have been on every diet known to mankind at some stage in my life, and before my clients come to me for help, they too have been on the yo yo diet rollercoaster and needless to say, together we have all failed-miserably!

After the birth of my four children I really struggled to lose the pounds and regain the shape I had before my pregnancies. Like most people I decided to adopt a low fat , low calorie approach ,being actively involved in sport most of my life I easily participated in a vigorous training regime consisting of primarily cardio, I even ran Marathons and half marathons in a quest to “get thin!”, In reality, I actually became fatter! To add insult to injury, I was constantly exhausted, cranky, hungry and felt like a failure as I often fell off the wagon on my low calorie diets, I was at my wits end.. Something had to change!!

“ if you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always got.

If what you are doing is not working, do something else ”

Reasons to avoid Low calorie Diets

Hormones

Thyroid, Leptin, Cortisol and Testosterone, are hormones which are impacted by low calorie diets. Thyroid function helps regulate your metabolic rate, Leptin and Testosterone are also down regulated when cutting calories and can wreck havoc with the very hormones you need working at peak efficiency. Research has shown that Cortisol the stress hormone in inversely related to calorie level, as a result; low calories lead to high Cortisol therefore reducing metabolism.

Hunger and cravings

Hunger is impossible to obey. If your diet is too low in calories or sets too may rules about what you can eat, the feeling of deprivation can trigger cravings and binges.

Risk of muscle loss

Dieting without resistance training can cause 30-50% of your weight loss to come from lean tissue. Even when you are lifting weights and eating enough protein, if your diet is too severe, some of the lost weight can still come from muscle.

Diets make you fat

Almost everyone loses weight in the beginning, but later on,when the weight loss slows down and hunger pangs intensify, most people give up, even binge. Eventually the yo-yo diet cycle starts over again, and with each cycle of this madness your metabolism becomes less efficient and you may get fatter more easily while eating less food than before.

The odds of you losing fat permanently with traditional low calorie diets are stacked against you biologically, psychologically and environmentally. It sounds grim, but the good news is that you can bypass the problems if you avoid the typical diet mentality.
